NANA TODAY WILL PREPARE air fryer Nutella pockets: golden, crisp-edged bread with a soft chocolate-hazelnut centre. A few slices of sandwich bread, a spoonful of Nutella and a light egg wash are all you need for this little sweet treat. 🍫

These toast pies are made by folding the bread around the filling and pressing the edges with a fork. The outside toasts in the air fryer while the Nutella warms inside. They are especially handy when you want a small dessert without making pastry or turning on the oven.

Air Fryer Nutella Pockets

Makes: 4 pockets
Estimated prep: 10 minutes
Estimated cooking: 5–7 minutes per batch, plus preheating if required
Cooling: At least 3–5 minutes before serving

Equipment: Air fryer, chopping board, knife, fork, teaspoon and pastry brush.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices soft white sandwich bread
  • 4 teaspoons Nutella, about 1 teaspoon per pocket
  • 1 small egg, beaten, for sealing and brushing; you will not need all of it

Why three ingredients? Bread and Nutella make the filling and shell, but the egg wash is also an ingredient. It helps seal the edges and gives the tops a golden finish.

Choose fresh, soft bread that bends easily. Dry or thick slices can crack when folded. Keep the filling modest: a heaped spoonful may look tempting, but it makes the pockets harder to close.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread. Cut off the crusts. Gently flatten the middle of each slice with your fingers or the back of a spoon, leaving a small border around the edges. Avoid tearing the bread.
  2. Add the filling. Spread 1 teaspoon of Nutella over one half of each slice. Leave about 1 cm of clean bread around the outside so the edges can stick together.
  3. Fold and seal. Brush a thin layer of beaten egg around the border. Fold the empty half over the filling to make a rectangle. Press the edges together, then crimp all three open sides firmly with a fork without piercing the filled centre.

  1. Brush lightly. Brush the tops with a thin coat of beaten egg. Avoid soaking the bread or leaving puddles around the seams. Discard unused egg wash and wash utensils that touched it.
  2. Air fry. Preheat if your appliance instructions recommend it. Set the air fryer to 180°C / approximately 355°F, or 350°F if that is the closest setting. Arrange the pockets in a single layer with a little space between them. Cook for approximately 5–7 minutes, checking from 4 minutes. They should be golden and lightly crisp, with the egg coating fully set and no wet patches. Add time in short intervals if needed; bread thickness and air fryers vary.
  3. Let them cool. Transfer to a plate and leave for at least 3–5 minutes. Carefully open one to check the filling temperature before eating or serving to children: the Nutella can stay much hotter than the bread.

Nana’s tips for neat, crispy pockets

  • Keep the border clean. Chocolate spread on the seam prevents the bread from sealing properly. Wipe away any stray filling before folding.
  • Do not overfill. Start with a teaspoon. If your bread slices are small, use a little less so they close without stretching.
  • Give them room. Crowding traps moisture and can leave pale, soft patches. Cook a second batch if necessary.
  • Watch the final minutes. Thin sandwich bread can go from golden to dark quickly. Use the suggested time as a guide, rather than a guarantee.
  • Save the crusts. Toast them separately for breadcrumbs instead of throwing them away.

How to serve them

Serve warm once the filling is comfortable to eat. They need no topping, but sliced strawberries or banana make a simple addition. For a dessert plate, add a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. Powdered sugar, fruit and ice cream are optional extras and are not included in the three-ingredient count.

Can I prepare them ahead?

For the crispest texture, make only what you plan to serve and cook just before eating. The bread softens as it sits, so these pockets are best enjoyed freshly made.
